Why Buy Used Electric Motors?
When a production motor fails, lead time matters more than anything. Large-frame and specialty motors can take 8-20 weeks from the factory; a tested surplus motor in the right frame ships this week at 30-60% below list price. For standard NEMA frames, a used motor is functionally interchangeable with new.
Our motors come from plant closures and MRO surplus, ranging from unused stock still on the original skid to pulled-from-service motors that have been inspected. Each listing identifies frame size, HP, RPM, voltage, and enclosure so you can match your nameplate exactly.
- In-stock alternative to 8-20 week factory lead times
- Save 30-60% versus new motor pricing
- Nameplate specs listed: frame, HP, RPM, voltage, enclosure
- New-surplus and tested used options

Frequently Asked Questions About Used Motors
Common questions about buying used and surplus electric motors
How do I match a replacement motor to my failed one?
Photograph the nameplate — frame size, HP, RPM, voltage, phase, and enclosure are everything we need. NEMA frame sizes standardize shaft height and mounting dimensions, so a 256T frame from any manufacturer bolts in place of another 256T. Send us the nameplate and we'll confirm an exact or compatible match.
Are used motors tested before shipping?
Yes. Motors are megger-tested for insulation resistance and spun where practical; larger motors get winding resistance checks. New-surplus motors are visually inspected and meggered. Test results are available on request, and motors are covered by a 30-day inspection period unless sold as-is.
How much do used electric motors cost?
As a rule of thumb, tested used motors run 30-50% of list price and new-surplus 50-70%. A used 50 HP TEFC motor typically costs $1,500-$3,500 versus $6,000+ new; fractional and small-frame motors start under $200. Specialty motors (explosion-proof, vertical, large frame) vary with scarcity.
What's the difference between new-surplus and used motors?
New-surplus motors were purchased for projects that never used them — unused, often still crated, at a significant discount. Used motors were pulled from service and tested. For critical drives many buyers choose new-surplus; for spares and general duty, used offers the best value.
Do you buy surplus motors?
Yes — we purchase MRO spares inventories, warehouse surplus, and motors from plant closures, especially lots of 10+ motors or large-frame units above 100 HP. Send a list with nameplate photos for a bulk offer, and we'll arrange freight pickup.
Have Surplus Motors to Sell?
We buy MRO motor inventories, large-frame motors, and servo motors — from single units to entire spares warehouses.
